BNZ, an independent energy producer specialising in the development, construction and operation of multi-technology renewable energy projects, has inaugurated three new solar plants in the province of Almería. The facilities, named Ventura, Terrera and Hornosol, have a combined capacity of 150 MW and will prevent the emission of around 48,873 tonnes of CO₂ per year, a figure equivalent to approximately 61,000 return flights between Almería and London airports.
With this launch, BNZ consolidates its presence in Andalusia, where it already operates projects in the provinces of Cádiz (Alya and Alamak) and Jaén (Santa Catalina). Across Spain as a whole, the company now has nine operational plants, including the Moratalla plant in Murcia and the Emérita and Tremisol plants in Extremadura. The expansion will continue in the coming months with the inauguration of a fourth plant in Almería, called Alhamilla, which will increase BNZ’s total installed capacity in the province to 182 MW.
“Andalusia is a strategic region in our development plan due to its high solar potential and the strong commitment of institutions to the energy transition,” said BNZ CEO Luis Selva. “In addition, the projects developed in Almería represent a decisive step in our roadmap and reinforce our commitment to continue expanding our installed capacity in Spain, one of the priority markets in our renewable energy project portfolio in Europe,” he added.
Beyond its activities in Spain, BNZ has three other operational plants in Italy and Portugal, as part of a growth strategy that aims to exceed 2 GW of renewable capacity in Europe in the coming years.
Environmental and social commitment: BNZ’s impact in Almería
True to its model of territorial integration, BNZ has worked closely with local communities to ensure that project development has a positive impact on both the natural and social environment of the area.
During the construction phase, the plants have been a source of direct and indirect employment, and once operational, the company has promoted many environmental actions to promote biodiversity conservation. These include the creation of an ecological corridor in the area surrounding the Barranco de Burbano ravine, the installation of shelters, nest boxes and perches for birds, and the creation of ponds and drinking troughs for steppe species. The planting of cereal crops on 3 hectares of land has also been promoted in order to provide food and shelter for local wildlife.
This same commitment to environmental sustainability and the circular economy was recognised last June, when BNZ received “El Premio Verde Andaluz” at “Premios Horizonte Sostenible”, an award that recognises companies that make the greatest contribution to ecosystem conservation and energy transition in the region.
In the social and cultural sphere, BNZ has demonstrated its commitment to the community by sponsoring the latest edition of the Almería Western Film Festival (AWFF), an internationally renowned event dedicated to the western genre and audiovisual production, considered an essential part of the province’s cultural heritage. Likewise, in 2024, BNZ collaborated with DOWN Spain through a donation to the Fortaleza Empleo con Apoyo – Down Almería Project, an initiative that promotes the inclusion and autonomy of people with Down syndrome in the province, in line with the company’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) policy.
In this way, BNZ continues to advance its goal of making renewable energy a driver of progress, integrating technological innovation, environmental responsibility and social commitment in every territory where it operates.
