BNZ inaugurates two photovoltaic solar plants in Mérida (Spain) with a combined capacity of 19.2 MW
BNZ, an independent power producer (IPP) that develops, builds, and operates photovoltaic solar projects, has officially launched operations at two photovoltaic solar plants in Mérida, Extremadura (Spain). Named Emérita and Tremisol, each plant has an individual capacity of 9.6 MW.
The clean energy generated by these two facilities, which span 18 hectares each and have a combined capacity of 19.2 MW, will prevent the emission of 10,000 tons of CO2 equivalent annually. This is comparable to avoiding approximately 18,000 round-trip flights between Barcelona and Brussels.
Aligned with its goal to install approximately 600 MWp of capacity in Spain by 2026, this marks BNZ’s second project in the country, following a recently inaugurated plant in Cádiz, Andalusia. The company aims to deploy an aggregated portfolio exceeding 1.7 GW of photovoltaic solar energy across Southern Europe by the end of 2026.
Luis Selva, General Manager of BNZ, highlights this project as a milestone for the company and the energy sector: “The activation of Emérita and Tremisol underscores BNZ’s commitment to sustainable growth and the establishment of a more responsible, transformative energy model that leads the sector. This project adds to our track record and furthers our mission to drive Spain and Europe toward a future where renewable energy powers progress for local communities and economies.”
During the construction phase, the company created 140 direct and indirect jobs, involving over 14 local companies, significantly benefiting the local economy. Daniel Sánchez, BNZ’s Director of Engineering and Construction, commented: “Extremadura stands out for its exceptional solar potential, and harnessing it represents a key opportunity to advance the energy transition. Additionally, with this project, we aim to reaffirm our long-term commitment to the community’s economy and social fabric, responsibly integrating technology and sustainability into every action we undertake.”
BNZ, committed to biodiversity conservation and social development
Respect for local communities is a cornerstone of BNZ’s identity, prompting the company to design its new facilities to meet the highest environmental regeneration standards. To this end, BNZ has collaborated with local authorities to implement multiple initiatives aimed at protecting the region’s wildlife and flora.
Among these initiatives, the most notable is the radio-tracking of two white stork specimens from the local colony annually during the first five years of the operational phase. Additionally, avifauna monitoring will be conducted in the vicinity of the plant to manage the populations of amphibians and reptiles both within and outside the plant area. The installation of beehives is another key measure aimed at conserving bees—a species that plays a critical role in biodiversity, food security, and the global economy—amid the crisis they face due to climate change, pesticide use, and habitat loss.
Furthermore, a 3,500-square-meter parcel will be created exclusively for the conservation of Narcissus fernandesii and Narcissus milagrosus. This land will be ceded to the Junta of Extremadura to ensure the preservation of both species. Finally, throughout the operational lifespan of the solar facility, a significant portion of the plant’s surface will be dedicated to a campaign for the conservation of steppe bird species.
The company also considers social development as a key factor in community well-being. In this regard, BNZ is actively supporting the Iuxtanam Sports Club in Mérida, which, for its users, is much more than a space for sports. Through its canoeing and sports training programs, the club promotes integration, values-based education, and environmental awareness, fostering among its members a healthy and responsible lifestyle that aligns with the energy producer’s values.
Beyond sports, since 2023, BNZ has collaborated with the NGO Ayuda en Acción to enhance the employability of young people in vocational training, particularly those in vulnerable situations. This initiative is part of the “Impulsa Project,” promoted by the company to provide students with essential career skills, psychological support, and professional guidance.
All out, BNZ acknowledges the importance of listening to the local community and supporting initiatives that align with its ideals. The company is advancing toward a model where economic growth and social progress go hand in hand.
