BNZ begins construction of its battery storage projects in Italy with a capacity of over 216 MWh

BNZ, an independent power producer (IPP) developing and operating next-generation multi-technology renewable projects, has announced the start of construction works on its battery energy storage systems (BESS) at the Rinaldone and Camposcala projects, located in the Lazio region, Italy.

Both infrastructures represent the technological hybridization of the photovoltaic plants BNZ already operates in the region: Rinaldone, with a capacity of 45 MWp, and Camposcala, with 53 MWp. Each of these new battery systems features a power capacity of 27 MW (108 MWh) and a 4-hour duration, allowing energy to be stored during solar production peaks and fed into the grid during periods of highest demand.

Construction of the Rinaldone project is being carried out by Grupotec, while works at Camposcala are being delivered by Elecnor, with the objective of commissioning both facilities before year-end.

In the words of Luis Selva, CEO of BNZ: “The start of construction of the storage systems at Rinaldone and Camposcala marks a decisive step in our consolidation as a fully-fledged (alt.: comprehensive / integrated) energy operator in Italy. Hybridizing our assets with BESS technology is a cornerstone of our multi-technology strategy, as it allows us not only to maximize the efficiency of the clean energy we generate, but also to provide the firmness and flexibility that the electricity grid needs. With these projects, we reaffirm our commitment to the energy transition, security of supply, and the delivery of tangible value to local communities.”

Grid resilience and commitment to the local environment

The deployment of these batteries will deliver a substantial boost to the flexibility and resilience of the local power grid, serving as a vital backup system that balances electricity supply and demand in real time. In doing so, it drives a more efficient integration of renewables, minimizes clean energy curtailment, and strengthens the overall stability of the power system.

From an environmental standpoint, these projects will optimize solar generation and cut emissions from more carbon-intensive technologies. In fact, each facility is estimated to prevent between 10,000 and 15,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually. Furthermore, aligned with BNZ’s environmental conservation and biodiversity policies, the company has opted for natural vegetation control across the plants, recently introducing a flock of 350 sheep and three sheepdogs.

Socially, the development and construction phases have prioritized hiring local contractors and resources, directly fostering economic activity and job creation in the region. Likewise, as part of its community commitment, BNZ actively collaborates with local initiatives such as La Fiera Maremma d’Amare in Montalto di Castro and Viterbo Clean Up, among others.

A key milestone in the multi-technology energy platform

This construction milestone forms part of BNZ’s robust operational roll-out in Italy, where the company plans to install 350 MW of storage capacity distributed across a portfolio of eight strategic projects focused on high-irradiance areas. Across Europe, BNZ holds an overall portfolio exceeding 2.7 GW, of which 850 MW correspond to battery storage (BESS) technology.

By positioning itself as a Next-Generation IPP, BNZ goes beyond the traditional generation model, embedding asset hybridization, digitalization, and infrastructure optimization into its core strategy to maximize system efficiency and successfully address the challenges of the energy transition.
